Arnold Toynbee e a história comparada das civilizações

Abstract

Este artigo objetiva examinar a perspectiva historiográfica do historiador inglês Arnold Toynbee direcionada à constituição de uma História Comparada das Civilizações na primeira metade do século XX. Depois de uma análise do contexto no qual emerge a idéia de uma História das Civilizações no período da Primeira Guerra Mundial, o texto examina alguns aspectos da obra Um Estudo de História, produzido por Arnold Toynbee entre 1934 e 1965, e idealizado em momentos anteriores.

This article intends to examine the historical perspective of the English historian Arnold Toynbee in order to constitute a Compared History of Civilizations in the first half of the twentieth century. After an analysis of the context in which the idea of a History of Civilizations in the times of the First Word War emerges, the text examines some aspects of the work A Study of History, published by Toynbee between 1934 and 1961, and idealized in anterior moments.
